Lackawanna, NY — Officials in Lackawanna, NY say one person died after a house exploded on Tuesday morning.
Fire officials in Lackawanna say the crew reported a house explosion in response to 91 Bedford Avenue at around 7:20 am.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a large field of debris burning from the base of the house, with the house destroyed.
According to officials, 92-year-old Irene Sanok was sentenced to death on the scene by the Erie County Medical Inspector’s Office.
No other person is believed to have been in the house and no other injuries have been reported at this time.
Seven other homes have been damaged in the area and are being evaluated by the Lackawanna Code Enforcement Officer.
The cause of the explosion is being investigated by the Lackawanna City Fire Department, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, and National Fuel. Expected to take several days.
Neighbor Michael Salamone, a volunteer firefighter at Reserve Horse, was not part of the official response. He told 7Eyewitness News about what he saw.
“War zone, I’ve never been to a war zone, but it looks like a war zone, debris is everywhere, there are debris in the backyard like the other side of the house, and the windshield is clogged with debris. “It is,” said Saramone. ..
According to Salamone, he opened the blinds, and that was when the flash / explosion occurred. He said it blinded him for a few minutes. Then he saw a huge fireball and flame in the middle of the basement.
“This is sad. We are a close community and will be a hit later,” said Salamon.
