Colorado Springs — This week, a local charity is celebrating a 100-year donation to the Colorado Springs community. Over 100 volunteers have registered to support four projects in the city called the “Week of Action.”

Over three hours on Wednesday morning, more than 40 volunteers appeared on the Sand Creek Trail in South East Springs to help clean open spaces and trails, pick up trash and fill dozens of bags.

“When we first got down here, it was a complete mess. There were piles of garbage scattered all over,” said Sean Markley, who works for the El Paso County Public Works Department. “I probably picked up 15 to 20 bags of trash. It’s important to clean up the community and make it look good to everyone, and to make everything safe for those who use these trails. Is also important. “

Pikes Peak United Way celebrates on Action Day every year, but they have been serving the community for 100 years, so they wanted to volunteer for a full week this year.

“It’s fascinating to think about what started in 1922 and what it looked like. We’ve responded to many war efforts, and in many cases the United Way is the best when a crisis strikes. “We are in a state of affairs,” said Heathersteinman, COO of Pikes Peak United Way.

This year, the organization funded nearly 40 local nonprofits with $ 1,000,000, according to Steinman. Also, before Wednesday, the organization identified the Sand Creek Trail as an area in need of assistance.

“Especially last year, there was a lot of garbage in this area, and a lot of temporary people came and went,” Steinman said.

District 4 County Commissioner Longinos Gonzalez also got his hands dirty to help beautify the district he represents.

“We’ve been working early this morning to help clean up the neighborhood, in our community,” Gonzales said. “No doubt, this area needs TLC. It’s a big open space that wants to clean and beautify this area of town.”>

On Thursday, members of the Otolaryngology team will go out to clean up more sections of the Sand Creek Trail. On Tuesday, the team also held a food ration to provide £ 10,000 of food to more than 250 families in South East Springs. Later this week, we plan to help build the Habitat for Humanity home.
