Dozens of athletes exchanged flip-flops for cleats and moved beyond the Grand Strand into the professional league.
Among them are soccer and basketball players, as well as dancers and surfers.
Introducing 15 professional athletes associated with the Myrtle Beach area in no particular order.
- Darius Leonardo
Leonard, who attended Lakeview High School, is now a linebacker in Indianapolis Colts. In March, he and his wife Kayla founded the Maniac Foundation to improve children’s health and get them involved in mathematics. The foundation is for Indianapolis and Lakeview families.
Leonard also played at South Carolina State University. He was named MEAC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017, won the First Team All Pro Selection in 2018 and 2020, and the Second Team All Pro Selection in 2019.
- Jordan Lyles
A graduate of Hartsville High School is currently a Texas Rangers pitcher. He previously played for the Houston Astros, Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers.
- Dusty baton
Born in Myrtle Beach, Button moved to New York City at the age of 16 and trained at the Jacqueline Kennedionasis School of American Ballet Theater. She continued training at the Royal Ballet School in London and participated in the Birmingham Royal Ballet. She became Red Bull’s first ballet athlete and co-starred with groups such as the American Ballet Theater, the Mongolian National Ballet, and Broadway Underground.
- Hunter Ren Flow
A graduate of Socastee High School became a Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver after playing at Clemson University. He was a two-time national champion at Clemson and played for the Auckland Raiders. He held a youth soccer camp at Socasty High School.
- Ramon session
The session was born on Myrtle Beach. Former professional basketball player has played for teams such as Milwaukee Bucks, Washington Wizards, New York Knicks and Sacramento Kings.
He has held an annual basketball camp in Grand Strand for over a decade. He was first drafted in 2007 and has remained in the NBA for over a decade.
- Cam Richards
Richards, a professional surfer, is from Pauly’s Island. You can watch a video of him riding the waves on his Instagram with over 37,000 followers.
- Bryan Edwards
Conway High School graduates recently began their career as wide receivers at the Las Vegas Raiders. He was named to the team in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
- Levon Kirkland
The retired NFL player was born in Lamar. After playing at Clemson University, Kirkland was a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, and Philadelphia Eagles.
- Christie McPherson
Originally from Conway, McPherson is currently on an LPGA tour. She starred in the golf channel “Big Break” in 2006.
- John Abraham
The retired NFL player has graduated from Lamar High School. Defensive End played for teams such as the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Jets.
- Clint Newton
Retired rugby player Newton was born in Myrtle Beach. He played for teams such as Newcastle Knights, Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers. He represented the United States in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup campaign. His sister Christie Newton is a professional golfer.
- Brandon Fly
The retired offensive tackle, Fly, was born on Myrtle Beach. He played for the Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, and Seattle Seahawks.
- Everett Gorson
Former CFL player Golson was born in Myrtle Beach. He played for Notre Dame before moving to Florida.
- Talon Jackson
Jackson, who played at Coastal Carolina University, was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles this year. Defensive End graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 2020.
- Dustin Johnson
PGA Tour player Johnson attended Coastal Carolina University. He won $ 15 million in the FedEx Cup and chose not to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
