According to police, students and staff on two Corpus Christi campuses were threatened with social media posts created abroad.
The schools involved were the King High School of Corpus Christi ISD and the Annapolis Christian Academy, a private Christian institution.
Investigators from the Corpus Christi Police Criminal Investigation Division and the Organized Crime Unit were notified of the post by the school district police chief Kirby Wanke on Saturday. Together, they immediately began an investigation to determine the effectiveness of the threat and to identify the suspects involved.
Operations officers, along with Corpus Christi ISD police officers, met with the managers of both schools to coordinate law enforcement responses. They also provided a uniform presence on unspecified campuses.
Warnke said there were implicit threats through social media, but no obvious threats. He said they are currently trying to track the owners of social media accounts.
“There were no real direct threats, but we are taking precautions to increase our security presence on campus,” Warnke said. “Constable Jason McCahan in District 2 said some of his staff would be there to support our efforts.”
Detectives have been able to work closely with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security to collect information that makes them believe that their posts originated from outside the United States.
Authorities have not disclosed the country of origin of the post.
Police said in a statement that investigators were proceeding with proceedings to determine the identity of foreign posters and whether they had any local ties to the community.
Corpus Christi police will request the community to contact investigators with information on these threats at 361-886-2840.
