Police said someone broke into the altar of a church in New York City, stole a $ 2 million gold relic, and removed his head from the statue of an angel late last week.
The incident occurred at the Roman Catholic Church in St. Augustine, known as the “Notre Dame” in Brooklyn’s Park Slope district, between 6:30 pm Thursday and 4 pm Saturday.
At that time, the church was closed for construction. According to the church minister, camera records from the church’s security system were also stolen.
The Brooklyn Parish called it a “brave crime of contempt and hatred.”
The parish said a thief tore a metal protective case and took it off in the tabernacle dating back to the opening of the church in the 1890s.
The tabernacle, a box containing communion items, was made of 18 carats of gold and adorned with jewels, police and the parish said. It’s worth $ 2 million.
The parish said it was irreplaceable because of its historical and artistic value.
According to a guidebook posted on the church’s website, the Tabernacle was built in 1895 and restored in 1952 and 2000.
It is “one of the most expensive Tabernacle masterpieces in the country, protected by a unique security system,” including an “electronically operated security safe” and a “1 inch thick steel plate that completely surrounds the Tabernacle.” It is explained.
The parish said the angel statue adjacent to the tabernacle was decapitated and destroyed. The sacristy vault where the priests were preparing for the mass was also opened, but there was nothing inside.
The Eucharist, the bread consecrated as the body of Christ, was taken out of the tabernacle and thrown to the altar.
“This is devastating because Tabernacle is the central focus of our church outside of worship and holds the Eucharist,” said Rev. Frank Tsumino, Rev. of St. Augustine. Said. In a statement issued by the parish.
“It’s a vicious act of contempt to find out that a thief has entered the most sacred place of our beautiful church and has put a lot of effort into interrupting our security system,” Tumino said.
