Newport News, Virginia (WAVY) —Newport News police say two students shot dead at Heritage High School on Monday are expected to recover and the suspect is currently in custody.
Steve Drew, Newport News police chief, said both victims were 17 years old. The boy was shot beside his face and the girl was shot in the lower leg. Drew said the injuries to both victims were not considered life-threatening.
“Both of the reports I just received from the hospital [wound] It is considered life-threatening and we thank God. That’s the most important thing, “said Drew. He was preparing to go to the hospital to meet the victims.
Shortly after 2:40 pm, Drew said the suspected boy had been detained with the help of the community. He couldn’t reveal details about who he was and where he was arrested, but confirmed that it was outside the school grounds and the gun was recovered. It is still unknown how the suspect first brought the gun to school.
Drew previously stated that the information showed that the victim and the suspect knew each other and that the shooter did not appear to be looking to shoot others.
The school was evacuated and the other two were injured unrelated to the shooting.
“We believe they knew each other … I don’t think this is an individual looking for a community to hurt their members,” Drew said. He said he couldn’t guess any further.
According to police, rumors that there were active archers in other schools were false.
The students were evacuated and sent to the school’s tennis court, where parents were able to meet their children. The school also includes 6th and 7th grades. Huntington Middle School closed.
The nearby achievable dream middle and high schools have also been blocked.
Police first received the call at 11:38 am, but on Monday afternoon there was still a major police presence in the area. The FBI confirmed that it was supporting the Newport News police and evidence was collected within the school.

Newport News Public Schools canceled after-school activities at all municipal schools on Monday.
Thomas Nelson Community College said it will effectively host an evening class scheduled for Monday at the South East Center for Higher Education. The center is near Heritage High School.
