How does the election work?

The winner of an election is determined by a system called the Electoral College. Each of the 50 states and Washington, DC will be given the number of votes of the electorate, for a total of 538 votes. Population states win more electoral college votes than smaller states.

Candidates must win 270 Electoral College votes (50% plus 1) to win the election.

In all but two states, Maine and Nebraska, the candidate with the most votes wins all the votes of the state’s electoral college.

These rules allow candidates to win elections without getting the most votes at the national level. This happened in the last election, when Donald Trump won the majority of the Electoral College votes, but more people voted for Hillary Clinton across the United States.

How are the results reported?

The election results on this page are reported by the Associated Press. The Associated Press “calls” the winner, determining that subsequent candidates have no way to victory. This can happen before state votes are counted 100%.

The Associated Press also provides an estimate of the total number of votes for each state. Numbers will be updated throughout the election night as more data on turnout becomes available.
