Detroit-Buick is clearly a global car. I’ve read somewhere that China sells five times as many Buicks as the United States. And to take advantage of the crossover epidemic, Buick switched to an all-crossover lineup.
The latest addition is the 2021 Buick Envision. Billed as a compact SUV. It’s lower and wider than most crossovers, and it gives it a car silhouette. However, there are 25 cu in the cargo area. The rear seats are upright and have a storage space of 50 cu or more. Storage feet with the second row seats folded.
Buick said the 2021 Envision has the look and performance of a car, as well as crossover capabilities.
During a week’s test drive, I realized that a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine produced 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft torque at 1,500 rpm. Combined with a 9-speed automatic engine.
The engine was smooth. The power distribution was considerable. When the traffic was light in the early morning, I could easily drive at 80 mph without any auditory strain on the engine.
This transmission was smooth, easy to shift and was decisive in gear selection. Oh, there was also a paddle shifter we had never used. It can tow up to 1,500 pounds.
There were 3 trim lines and it was an essence all-wheel drive. The package was 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, for a total of 25 mpg. And there were four drive modes: touring, all-wheel drive, sports and off-road.
We are not dissatisfied with the last one. Envision’s styling and smoothness weren’t suitable for off-road excursions. In these parts, something to deal with would be better with snow and ice.
The instrument was a hybrid blend of analog and digital, the odometer and speedometer had old-fashioned numbers, and the TFT screen between them was digital.
There was a seat with a heater and a steering wheel with a heater. Climate control was under the infotainment touch screen. Below them were two USB jacks and next to them was a 12V plug.
It had a heads-up display and could choose from four different information packages that could be displayed. The key is rapidly extinct. Our test car was keyless and had a good stop start and polymer veneer strips throughout the dash.
Over the years, the brand hasn’t lost one of its most famous features. This crossover was quiet in Buick. The road manners were excellent. It dealt with bumps and ruts in driving in big cities without problems.
There were two more USB jacks in the backseat area. There was plenty of headroom and leg room. I thought the back seats were a little stiffer than the front seats. And I found that the softness of the door panel was a little reduced. Moreover, even on the front, the door panel was soft towards the opening and stiff towards the hinges.
I think the three people sitting in the back seats are really uncomfortable because of the high tunnels needed to accommodate all-wheel drive. There was a faint but distinctive white ambient lighting. There was also a stitch.
Power windows were not automatic. With the exception of the screwdriver, the window was automatically lowered with a single touch. But they won’t go up. And the side panels had some sort of design that looked like a watermark. However, they were barely noticeable.
Our test vehicle had several optional packages. The technology package included navigation, Bluetooth streaming, voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a memory card slot.
The sports touring package included a body-colored door handle, a tonneau cover for the rear cargo space, a black roof rail, 20-inch alloy wheels and a unique badge.
At $ 43,115, the 2021 Buick Envision AWD looked like a good value.
