Minivans rarely get sexy, but they still can’t stop businesses from trying to make attractive minivans, and their successes vary.

Auburn Hills gangsters have determined that an eye-pleasing design may help boost sales of the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. The whole “hybrid” was put in for a credible measure of green.

This approach worked mostly, at least within the limits imposed by the shape of the van on creativity. The Pacifica Hybrid is, dare to say, stylish.

It is also very competent overall.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain is a combination of a 3.6-liter V6 and dual electric motors, which Chrysler calls an electrically variable automatic transmission with a total of 260 horsepower. The van is front-wheel drive.

The system works smoothly and seamlessly, but don’t expect this van to be a burner. It is on the slow side when it comes to acceleration. It’s also not a completely driver’s van – the handling is competent enough for suburban cars, and it’s not completely lacking in personality, but it’s not as dialed in as the Honda Odyssey.

But ride quality is another issue, walking the delicate line between being comfortable and being too soft. Chrysler manages to avoid the latter – the ride quality is smooth enough while it is solid enough. It’s a comfortable highway cruiser.

This is all you really need a minivan. We “car people” love so-called “driver’s licenses” because we want to believe that we don’t have to give up the fun of driving altogether in the face of practicality, but most minivan buyers say about it. I don’t care. What they really need is a comfortable, obedient ride and enough steering feel to remind them that they aren’t dead inside just because they’re driving a minivan.

Pacifica makes that happen. And it does so while providing controls that look good on the inside and outside, are easy to read and use. Needless to say, if the FCA / Stellantis movement is very low, most materials will feel comfortable, or at least in class / price. Everything here works easily.

I didn’t have a chance to plug it in. Charging wherever you live is difficult, to say the least, so you tend to rely on dead dinosaur juice when testing PHEVs. For curious people, or perhaps everyone, the van gets a total rating of 82MPGe for cities / highways and a total rating of 30mpg for cities / highways when driven on gas only. The 240 volt Level II charger recharges the battery in just two hours. Regenerative braking is part of the system, and Chrysler promises a range of over 500 miles while the fuel tank is full. The electricity-only range is up to 30 miles.

It’s not money to sneeze, and because there are fewer people you can get a family carrier in either a minivan or a crossover in three rows. But you get what you pay for, and a well-thought-out / well-executed package is what you get here.

Well, if that could be said about other particular models of the Stellantis family …
