2021 Ford Bronco Sport casts a shadow over the big Bronco

They asked the same question at hockey rinks, school drop-offs, and supermarket parking lots. “Is it a new Bronco?!? How is it?”

In each case, almost 12 times a weekend, “this is a Bronco sport. Big Bronco will be available in a few months,” I said.

Men, women and teens wouldn’t care anymore. Before Ford unveiled the Bronco Sport, whether by design or by luck Larger bronco Later this spring, unlike other compact crossovers, it caught the attention of people, including the long-awaited revival of 2020. Land Rover Defender..

That’s one of the reasons Ford Bronco Sport hit highs in 2021. 7.0 out of 10 TCC ratings When tested in December. A few months later, during a week of February’s frigid storms in Chicagoland, its style and features were even more appreciated. The front seats are more capacity and the back seats may have less legroom than their brother’s twin, the Ford Escape. However, Bronco Sports is a suburban jeep beater.

Hits: Sturdy style, suburban manners

People think it’s Bronco when they see the box-shaped edges and large letters engraved on the grill. Not surprisingly, there is the same headlight, labeled Bronco, shaped like an eyelet. The hood has a twin bulge that stretches like a board from the front seats away from the steep cliffs of the grill. The large Bronco has ridges on both ends for better orientation when off-road. They are similar rather than different. It’s a clever move by Ford. Because under the skin, it’s a much more Ford Escape than the Bally Bronco.

Chunky black cladding runs from bumper to bumper over the wheel arch, and the boxed rear end with roof rails integrated with split glass lift gates brings practicality to the sport. With the exception of the Defender, Bronco and Wrangler, it looks more like a traditional SUV than anything else on the road. It rides softer and quieter than the Wrangler, but it’s not as calm as the Escape.

Hit and Miss: Features

In December, I tested and exploded a top Badlands model where an old rock quarry turned into a sandy RV park. It features a 2.0-liter turbo 4 that produces 245hp and 275lb-ft of torque, an all-wheel drive system close to four-wheel drive, and off-road upgrades such as four skid plates. -Road crawl mode, and more powerful suspension. It is more capable than the Jeep Compass or Cherokee Trailhawk Evaluation Edition.

However, I also tested the Outer Banks model with a 1.5-liter turbo 3 that produces 181hp and 190lb-ft of torque. It was successfully processed in a sand quarry, and a few months later, returning home in deep, moist snow proved itself in situations that more drivers might face.

It has a more familiar all-wheel drive system that can deliver up to 50% torque to the rear wheels when front wheel slip is detected. Alternatively, the driver can switch to slippery mode or sand mode (GOAT selector, “Goes Over Any Terrain”) to distribute torque across the axles.

Unlike the Badlands model’s twin clutch setup, the base model uses an open rear differential and the braking system redirects torque from the slip wheel to a more grippy wheel. In the deep snow, there was a layer of ice underneath, and I had to rock the Bronco Sport back and forth to get a foothold. When I switched to sand mode, I turned the steering wheel left and right to add a little gas, and it came out of the snowman. You don’t have to worry about negotiating uncultivated alleys or breaking snow walls that once had parked cars.

The terrain mode and all-wheel drive system, combined with the tighter damping of the suspension, provide robust performance in less than ideal situations. The 17-inch wheels are offset for more stable and wider trucks than the Ford Escape, giving you more confident access to more places.

The downside is that it rides bigger than the escape, bends with more body rolls, has an EPA-rated 25 mpg city, 28 highways, 26 combinations, and this boxer-looking alternative is better than all-wheel drive. Also 2mpg is low efficiency escape. But its practical capabilities and the illusion of bringing it to an old quarry are worth it.

Hit: Internal storage space

My daughter’s hockey goalkeeper gear fits behind the Bronco Sport without folding the backseat, allowing another gear to be stacked in the carpool. Sure, the sticks ride on shotguns and hang on the back, but the Bronco Sport has more functional space than most compact crossovers.

According to the numbers, the cargo space of 32.5 cubic feet behind the backseat is 5.0 cubic feet less than the escape.

Why does it look wider? It’s all about boxes. The Bronco Sport is 8.6 inches shorter, but 4.0 inches higher than the Escape. Packing things in a box is much easier than a tilted angle. When the seat is folded flat, the Bronco Sport roughly matches the space of 65 cubic feet of escape.

The Bronco Sport Outer Bank has plenty of clever storage space. The cargo floor can be kept flat with 60/40 split rear seats. Alternatively, it can be lowered by about 3 inches to increase vertical space. On either side, there is a gallon of milk or a 6-pack or 2-pack side cub between the rear of the wheelwell and the gate. And there is a bottle opener at the gate.

The front seat back has a zipper pocket for tablets and other valuables, and the mall strap can be hung with a carabiner for other gear. The inner seat pocket holds sunglasses, a wallet, a phone, or one of those older Atlases. On the front, a phone, gloves, etc. are stored in a recess under the standard 8.0-inch touch screen.

Miss: Seat comfort

Covered with another leather, the beige leather is reminiscent of my dad’s Bronco Eddie Bauer series from the 80’s, but the front seats have the same short bottom as the escape. The lack of thigh support is disappointing.

The rear seat legroom loses 4.0 inches from the escape, as the wheelbase may be 1.6 inches shorter. Great for 2 people, but 4 people is fine. Forget the fifth.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport divides the difference between Ford Escape and Jeep Wrangler. It looks different enough and works rugged enough to appeal to shoppers who want something like a Wrangler, but aren’t going to use hardcore Wrangler off-road hardware. When I spent a week in the city, I enjoyed Bronco sports more on each drive, not because strangers noticed it. Ford outselled Bronco and created a winner who might outsell the escape. It has to worry about the jeep.
