As Ford Bronco approaches launch in 2021, enthusiasts and automotive media continue to look for relevant information related to Bronco. This is the most anticipated vehicle launch this year and we all want to drive it now. I don’t have a chance to drive Bronco today, but there is Bronco news.Both Full size Bronco And Bronconation Have got Fuel economy figures For Ford Bronco in 2021, and they aren’t great.
I don’t think anyone thought Bronco would be a fuel economy star, but some ratings are well below the Jeep Wrangler. The most fuel-efficient version of the 2021 Ford Bronco is powered by a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder. The base, big bend and Outer Banks trims receive a combined fuel economy rating of 20 cities / 22 highways / 21.
Equipped with the much-talked-about Sasquatch package, the Bronco has a combined rating of 17 cities / 17 highways / 17 with a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6. With a small two-door gas tank, it gives Bronco Sasquatch a range of approximately 290 miles. In Canada, the 2.7 liter Sasquatch is rated at 13.9 L / 100 km and the 2.3 liter with automatic is rated at 11.2 L / 100 km.
Bronco’s biggest and most direct competition, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler, outperforms Bronco on the EPA’s treadmill. The most fuel-efficient gas-powered Wrangler is a two-door with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. It features a total rating of 22 cities / 24 highways / 23. The most inefficient, V8-less Wrangler is a 3.6-liter powered 4-door with a 6-speed manual transmission. It is rated on a total of 17 cities / 23 highways / 19.
So will a new vehicle with two additional gears and two fewer cylinders perform the same or worse in fuel economy tests? One of the biggest reasons can be weight. The 4-door Jeep Wrangler Sahara has a curb weight of 4,263 pounds. The lightest Bronco, a base two-door with a 7-speed manual transmission, is 23 pounds heavier. The closest comparison to the Wrangler Sahara is the Bronco Outer Banks. The 4-door version with a 2.7-liter V6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission weighs 4,558 pounds. And it’s not even the heaviest Bronco.
Aerodynamics may also be part of the answer. Both the Wrangler and Bronco are relatively box-shaped, but the Bronco has a fairly brick-like shape.
Another reason why Bronco’s fuel economy rating seems to be low is that options like 33-inch and 35-inch tires are not without their drawbacks. Bronco equipped with Sasquatch has more armor, larger wheels, and different suspension than other Bronco. People who buy Bronco Sasquatch probably don’t care much about fuel economy. Ratings are consistent with other off-road-focused vehicles such as the Ford Raptor and Lift Wrangler. It is important to note that Jeep does not currently offer a Wrangler that competes directly with the Bronco Sasquatch.
Still, I’m a little disappointed that a new car with a 4-cylinder engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission can barely break 20 miles per gallon.
But don’t be surprised. My own daily driver is the 2019 Ford Ranger XLT 4×4. Dash’s current fuel economy figures are 18.7 miles per gallon. You rarely see more than 20 miles per gallon on a drive. I’m hoping that a Bronco with a 7-speed automatic will exceed the EPA’s estimate in the real world, but I don’t spend money on it. It’s still 4,300 pounds of brick, with 33-inch tires and top removed. I think I have to rely on a smile per gallon.
