Jeep’s off-road goodwill remains intact in the 2021 Cherokee. It doesn’t have the same box shape as the latest Cherokee, or it doesn’t offer the Forest Department greens, but the Jeep has an off-road SUV in a mall-ready crossover outfit.
Earn a 5.7 TCC rating. It can be an off-road monster and it’s also a bad dream at the pump. It’s not as efficient or spacious as its rivals, but if you’re considering a jeep, I hope the pavement will soon harden in the near future. (((Read more about how to evaluate a car.. )
This year, Jeep will add active safety features such as automatic emergency braking and active lane control to all Cherokees. It’s a commendable move, but a little behind its Toyota and Honda rivals. Our favorite engine is now even more limited — at least it’s still available with limited trim.

Available in Latitude, Latitude Plus, Latitude Lux, Limited and Trailhawk trims, the Cherokee rounds some corners to get one or three styling cues from the Grand Cherokee. The Jeep still makes a box on the wheels — it’s just called a Wrangler or Gladiator.
The Cherokee base 2.4-liter in-line 4-cylinder is forgotten with just 180 horsepower to motivate up to 2 tonnes, but is most efficient with a total of up to 25 mpg. The enhanced 271 horsepower, 3.2 liter V-6 thirst is tolerated thanks to better power, but choose the 270 horsepower 2.0 liter turbo 4 that produces power similar to the latter with the former fuel economy.
The jeep wraps its interior in a comfortable and durable material, but is more cramped than anything else in its class. The backseat room is comparable to something like the Honda CR-V, but it compromises cargo space of only 24.1 cubic feet with the seats far behind.
The safety score, mixed with the Fed’s 4 star, is a IIHS “good” rating, but not a top safety pick.
Latitude features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, 17-inch wheels, upholstery, and a 7.0-inch touch screen for infotainment with active safety features. I spent up to Latitude Lux and opt-in with the Turbo 4. For over $ 31,000, it’s more expensive than its competitors, but with the addition of leather upholstery and an 8.4-inch touchscreen option.
The Cherokee Trailhawk is the pinnacle of compact SUVs for off-road talent, unless you consider the 2-door Wrangler to be a compact SUV.
