When the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX was launched last fall, Twitter’s usual suspects of auto-journalist said such trucks had a disastrous rate.
These people seemed to ignore the fact that these trucks are unlikely to add more fuel to climate change fires, as TRX is likely to be sold in very small numbers. But there was a point.
Aside from the discussion of possible contributions to the destruction of our planet, there really is no logical reason to buy a TRX. I need a 702 horsepower dune jumper and I can afford it, so I will buy it. That’s almost it.
And if acceleration leads you to need a change of pants, or if the Prius is too wild for you, you will want it.
If you need a truck with a focus on towing, a ride on the road when unloaded, or a truck that uses less fuel, it’s a good choice for other Ram series products. Other than performance, TRX works well only on and off the pavement, but it provides interior comfort. Well, it’s not as smooth as your normal 1500, but given the mission of the truck, the ride quality isn’t that bad.
“Hellcat All The Things” is a recent running gag, and this track is a runner thanks to the aforementioned 702 ponies and the 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 that produces 650lb-ft of torque. Overtaking is easy. If you want to giggle like an idiot, find an open path, grind the gas, listen to the bark of the turbocharger, and keep it effective.
Speaking of holding up, I faithfully put the TRX off-road on a muddy winter day.The truck had no problem navigating the same trail I almost swallowed a bird of prey You really maneuvered and the Bilstein Blackhawk (2.6 inch front and rear) off-road shocks mitigated the effects of the worst bumps and hooded duo.
Then your humble author slipped a $ 90,000 truck onto the embankment in the astonishment of his embarrassed father on a shotgun at the moment of true bitterness.
At least the truck gauge can show the pitch angle when you’re worried that you’ll fall if you shift your seat incorrectly.
Perhaps I’m overly harsh on myself. I simply put the wheel about a foot to the right to catch the mud and slide it towards an empty land. I was trying not to go too far to the left, slamming the truck into the berm and over-compensating like a Tinder guy.
Some friendly weekend warriors towed us-not a quick and easy process-and TRX became an intact soldier. The shorts were clean, but my ego suffered another bruise. If you keep the score, I’m 2 to 2 for losing in the park when I’m not supervised (I went well with the Wrangler) Then-FCA management Event a few months after the Raptor incident).
Similar to my Raptor failure, the 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires are aimed at maintaining on-road comfort while maintaining off-road performance, with as deep a Mac as aftermarket rubber. I think it’s not good. maybe.
The truck managed well for the rest of the ride and swept the stream without stressing me. There was no harm to bodywork and TRX ran like a champion on his way home. Also, if the manager of a particular coin-operated car wash in the far west of Chicago is reading this, I apologize for the possibility of ignoring the “no mud” sign and clogging the drain. .. Apparently I don’t have a security camera, but thank you.
On the road, the TRX runs well on interstate highways, just like Raptor’s rivals. If you can afford the cost of fuel, it’s enough for you to do this easily every day. I have never seen a two digit mpg number. The closest I was was 9.8. Still, thanks to the 33 gallon fuel tank, I still left a quarter tank and returned the truck to the fleet. Enough for those people to get home easily.
Perhaps the only dynamic flaw is that the steering is well weighted, but sometimes feels a bit artificial. Also, the engine can get a little bigger, even when loafing the freeway. Again, that’s probably what you’d expect.
Still, TRX is relatively easy to handle on-ramp, but even a properly processed truck is still a truck.
In addition to Bilstein, other off-road goods include a 3.55 ratio Dana 60 solid rear axle, a fully floating hub, and dampers for axle hops. This list includes an electronically locked rear differential, a rugged air filter with dual filter elements, a full-time active transfer case, five skid plates, 18-inch wheels, mud / sand, rock and Baja drive modes. It is. You can see offload-specific gauges on the instrument cluster or infotainment screen. The front camera helps navigate off-road obstacles.
The suspension features active damping on the front and rear, forged aluminum front upper and lower control arms, and allows wheel travel of 13 inches or more at all four corners. It has an independent suspension at the front and a 5-link coil design at the rear.
The minimum ground clearance is stated as 11.8 inches. Non-off-road drive modes are auto, sport, tow truck, snow and custom. I can’t remember the drive mode when I tried to roll Rex. Other major off-road specifications: approach angle is 30.2 degrees, breakover is 21.9 degrees and departure angle is 23.5 degrees.
On-road high zinc is unforgettable – this truck boasts launch control.
TRX isn’t cheap, and not all the money spent on cool truck nuts goes to off-road or big motors. Standard features not yet mentioned include high-performance braking, full-speed forward collision warning plus, Uconnect infotainment, navigation, a 12-inch infotainment screen, a leather flat-bottomed steering wheel, and shift paddles. The base price is $ 69,995, which is a Starbucks latte for less than $ 70K.
Have fun here-it’s optional time. There are many, so I’ll skip them a bit for brevity. It starts with $ 200 Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coat Paint. Next is the Technology Group ($ 1,095), which includes a heads-up display, LED third brake lights, and automatic anti-glare rearview mirrors. Trailer Tow Group (Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring and Light Check) will add $ 195. The Advanced Safety Group will add pedestrian / cyclist emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and lane keep assist for $ 995. Bed Utility Groups (Bed Steps, Tie Downs, Spray-in Bed Liners) will add $ 845. The paint on this truck was two-tone, so I’ll add $ 250 to it. The carbon fiber package changes to leather and carbon fiber while keeping the steering wheel flat bottom, adding a red carbon fiber interior accent. Add $ 1,295 for that.
Here’s the big one: Level 2 equipment group. For $ 7,290, leather-trimmed bucket seats, heated front seats, cooled front seats, heated second-row seats, heated steering wheel, full-length console, LED ambient lighting for instrument panels , Includes accent lighting for front and rear doors, memory seat, power adjustable pedals, trailer brake control, blind spot and crosspath detection, LED lights for pickup bed, front and rear parking assist, rain detection wipers, rear seats Lower storage, keyless entry, remote start, power tailgate, split fold rear seat.
Rockrails add $ 995, premium audio from Harman Kardon costs an additional $ 1,195, and bed-mounted spare tire carriers add an additional $ 995. Finally, for the upgraded aluminum wheels that remain 18 inches, we’ll conclude with $ 1,895.
D and D cost $ 1,695, for a total of $ 89,565.
It’s a lot of money for a lot of trucks-so many trucks couldn’t even park in the garage for the light bar-but holy hell, it’s so much fun. Both on-road and off-road.
And I couldn’t even actually jump it – I just couldn’t find the right place. Although there were some nice hops from the slimy mud holes. Unfortunately, those slimy mud holes weren’t home to small but wise green creatures.
I can’t think of a TRX use case for someone who isn’t named Ivan Stewart. Maybe that’s the point.
So “horrible fun” is a use case, isn’t it?
