2021 Volkswagen Tiguan S 4 motion, countable days

Today’s review is water: water! It’s moist. The other day, I handed over my Golf Sportwagen key and the dealer’s service department lent me this base model 2021 Tiguan S 4 Motion. Since there is no glass on the roof, I think there is almost no water leakage, but what are the other features?

Tiguan has been dressed as a second generation since the 2018 model in North America. It has been in production worldwide since 2016, and this fall the refreshed Tiguan will be available as a 2022 model. Taos What Tim recently reviewed. You may have forgotten the difference in the market, as VW shows Tiguan that is not available for purchase on the 2021 version of the infotainment screen. Are they keen to move forward?

When asked how long Tiguan had existed in its current format, he would have guessed it was five or six years. Although ubiquitous, Tiguan’s appearance is quite old. The structural rear is a bit more decisive in design than the soft front end, but neither seems to be a concern for Volkswagen crossover buyers.

The appearance of the front end differs with the upper trim, but here in S there are no LED lamps, fog lamps, sporty grilles, only halogen and fog lamp blanks. LEDs are limited to the DRL here. Grab the door handle and you’ll be rewarded with a positive pull-and-return action, and the door can be opened and closed with confidence in a Germanic way. It feels good to open the door from the inside as well. There is no proximity key function or start button, so you need a remote control to use the door. The doors are surprisingly long, especially at the rear, and are easily accessible. The overall quality of the paint is good, the metallic graphite color is evenly applied and there is almost no orange peel. The panels, trims and doors are all in place, unlike unnamed competitors.

Once inside, head downhill a little. A gray band covers the entire surface and the trim bends and clicks under pressure. From abundant button blanks to rubber handles that are common to basic golf, you can find basic price reminders everywhere.

Gauges are similar to golf, but with less marking and a little cheaper. Infotainment is an old-style unit many years ago and does not include the XM radio. Backup camera images are fairly poor, with low frame rates and lagging. The buttons on the screen are small and difficult to press without taking your eyes off the road. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto exist, but USB-C is required to plug in. VW does not provide a standard USB port. This is what everyone has for their cell phone chargers.

Without this cable, I could easily pair my phone via Bluetooth and the music quality was a bit small, but ok. Climate adjustment is done through a manual unit common to Golf and Passat, Passat Tested last year. This trim is equipped with front and rear traffic assist, but not radar cruise. The parking sensor is also abnormal. Blind spot monitor is standard equipment.

The door armrests and center console are covered with padded cloth, while cheap, textured plastic covers most of the surface. The cloth isn’t smooth, so it grabs lint and hair, and (terrifyingly) the armrests on the driver’s door already reflect the skin cells around the window buttons. Since it is all black, the details look good. As expected, the seats are completely manual and decorated with several different fabric textures of S. The remaining surface of the burn is printed with a diamond pattern. The bottom of the front seat is too flat to support the thighs well for a 6-foot tall person.

Normally, adjusting the seat tilt may fix it, but the seat bottom cannot be adjusted for the front rake. The rake seat lever is adjusted only at the rear, supporting the driver forward as it slides out of the seat. Side bolstering is fine. Are you excited to hear how Tiguan drives? Don’t disappoint. The entire Tiguan range has the same 8-speed automatic transmission as the 2.0-liter TSI engine with the same turbocharger. The engine is compatible with 184 horses and may be sufficient if properly tuned. But that’s not the case. VW is primarily concerned with fuel economy here and seems to have created a very unstable engine with low RPM due to the narrow power band.To make up for this, the transmission very I am busy with daily driving. In most situations it will try to keep the RPM from 1,800 to 2,000, but at that rev the engine is not boosted. When acceleration is needed, the transmission activates and kicks down some gears. “But you have to do that!” You will say to the screen. That’s true, but the engine quickly runs out of steam. After peaking at 4,600 RPM, the transmission will gladly shift up to 2,000 rpm. The Tiguan feels heavy and slow, and the transmission adds a dim feel. There is some turbo shoe noise from the engine, but the other engine sounds are a bit rough and unsophisticated.

The result is a crossover that is very difficult to drive smoothly. It’s common to lie forward in traffic, as gentle feet can happen to boost the boost. This also happened in the parking lot. If the transmission is smooth, the process will be less noticeable, but providing gear is clumsy and formidable. Both upshifts and downshifts are sloppy processes. Normal mode was this week’s flavor (this is only selected within infotainment), as the problem is exacerbated in sport mode. The current driving mode is displayed in small letters in the upper left corner of the infotainment screen.

The aforementioned tilt cannot be improved by loosening the accelerator pedal too much. Spring feels tired here, and the author recalls the 200,000-mile Tahoe he owned in the past. During coasting, you cannot put your foot on the pedal because the pedal moves just by stepping on the pedal. Similarly, when trying to maintain speed, the bumps on the road cause the foot to move the pedals slightly. Hopefully Volkswagen will use stiffer springs in the 2022 refresh, as the current setup leads to foot fatigue.

The vertical distance between the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal is a little too long, which puts more strain on your ankle than necessary to cover the brake pedal in heavy traffic. The brake pedal itself is solid and the brakes are applied strongly early in the pedal stroke. No problem.

After traveling at a constant speed, Tiguan regains his composure and records an overall controlled ride quality. Here, there is a good compromise between handling and comfort, and body tilt is controlled. Comfort is aided by chunky tires with S-trims, but this sentiment changes with upper trims where larger rims require lower profile tires. The tires here are Goodyear Assurance 215/65 R17 and the road noise into the car is a bit too loud. There is a wind noise from the A pillar on the highway, but it is not so loud and you can talk silently.

The steering is fairly accurate, but numb. There is almost no dead space in the center, and even a small adjustment can change the direction of travel of the car. The steering is a bit lighter at high speeds, so it’s a good idea to make the VW heavier to prevent over-correction. Road vibrations come from the wheels at all speeds above 35 mph, but it’s worth it.

So should I buy the base model Tiguan S 4 Motion for $ 26,545? No. Tiguan shows its age and is one of the oldest competitors in this rapidly updated segment (only Equinox is old). The powertrain remains the same, but we hope it brings visual modernization and addresses many issues. Choosing a base model is fine, but in this highly competitive segment, with a poorly dynamic car. There is no reason to compromise.
