2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid vs. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: Crossover SUV Comparison

Crossover SUVs have taken over midsize sedans as the default choice for family cars, at least among our crew. Utility vehicles with great space and features actually suffered in one way: fuel economy.

It healed with the arrival of some excellent hybrid versions of today’s most popular crossovers, Toyota RAV4 When Hyundai Tucson.. Both have an edgy shape and a standard list of equipment that makes even the base version stand out. Currently, each has a gas-electric powertrain that is modest and has the potential for plug-in power.

The look can pull us into the car or turn it off. For us, the RAV4’s adventurous shape strikes all the right notes, and the rugged theme is cleverly carried over to the cabin. The edgy and folded body of Tucson also faints at first glance, but the lack of hard control in the interior and the more frugal look of the plastic trim take up the backseat.

More importantly, how the duel hybrid provides power and how efficiently it spins. That’s great news from both, and the hybrid is the model we choose over the gas-only powertrain of either car. At Tucson, the 226-horsepower powertrain combines a battery, motor and 1.6-liter turbo 4, with a 6-speed automatic that delivers a seamless hybrid driving experience and a net 38 mpg EPA overall rating. All-wheel drive is standard equipment, and the Tucson Hybrid does not offer EV-only driving modes or driver-selectable regenerative braking. It works because the battery power masks lean torque at low speeds and is very smooth overall. The Tucson Hybrid outperforms its petrol counterpart on winding roads, but I’d like to tune it again for its prominent body lean and light steering.

The RAV4, on the other hand, has a 2.5-liter in-line 4-cylinder with three motors. Two are for propulsion and the third is for all-wheel drive. This combination nets out at 219hp and delivers power via Toyota’s proprietary planetary torque split type electronic continuously variable transmission. It’s satisfying and fast enough, but its star power comes from its EPA’s combined rating of 40 mpg. The handling and ride quality are also properly comfortable. The latest RAV4 surpasses its predecessor in its steering feel and absorbent ride.

RAV4 Ace is a plug-in edition already available. Prime gets 42 miles of electric drive from a larger battery and achieves 0-60 mph acceleration in about 5.7 seconds. This is one of Toyota’s fastest periods. Immediately counter the Tucson plugin.

Both the Tucson and the RAV4 can easily seat four, and in some cases five. 2022 Tucson Make it better. Toyota’s seats have a thin bottom, yet RAV4 passengers in the passenger seat have less headroom, especially under the available sunroof. Luggage space is 37.5 cubic feet behind the rear foldable seats. The Tucson front bucket is perfect for reinforcement, the rear seat space is blown away by the RAV4, and so is the comfort of the seat. Its cargo hold also exceeds the RAV4 at 38.7 cubic feet.

The RAV4’s safety score is fairly good, but due to its 4-star NHTSA rating for front impact protection and excellent headlights, the IIHS Top Safety Pick Award applies only to the hybrid version. Tucson has not yet been crash tested. Both have automatic emergency braking and provide a surround view camera system, blind spot monitors, and non-standard adaptive cruise control.

The prices of the Tucson Hybrid and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid will end at once. Choose the ultra-efficient Twoson Hybrid Blue for $ 30,235 and get a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay (wireless) and Android Auto (wired, weird), or SEL for $ 32,835 or limited. You can spend $ 38,535 on conveniences. A plug-in model with a 32-mile microwave will be available and will cost thousands of dollars when it arrives later this year.

The RAV4, on the other hand, comes in LE hybrids for less than $ 30,000 and rises to over $ 36,000 with a power sunroof and other great features. However, the Tucson Hybrid can be trimmed with a 10.3-inch touch screen and comes with a 5-year / 60,000-mile warranty and 3-year free maintenance.

The Tucson Hybrid outperforms the RAV4 Hybrid at all fronts except for styling. That was before the crash test results came out. The winner is clear here, but the plugin RAV4 Prime is still one of the most efficient favorites of all utility vehicles. Tucson Plugin — Under pressure.
