On the last Monday of May, people across the United States honor women and men who died while working in the military. This national holiday was originally known as Decoration Day and was first observed in 1868 to honor soldiers killed during the civil war. By 1971, the day had become a national holiday and changed over the years to include those killed while serving in the US military. In 2022, the holiday will be Monday, May 30th, and several groups from Coastal Bend will hold a ceremony to commemorate the day.

Anniversary compliance at Rockport
The anniversary event will take place on Monday, May 30th at 10am at the Veterans Memorial Park on Austin Street in Rockport. In addition to the music tribute, the ceremony includes the American GI Forum Post & Unit # 324F, Carl Morrison American Legion Post & Unit # 363 & Sons of the Legion, and the “Report of Units” from Stewart-Wendell Veterans of Foreign. Wars Post # 3904. The guest speaker is Dr. Joshua Garcia, director of Aransas County ISD and a veteran of the US Navy.
