2022 Subaru WRX: Everything you expect

Many cars are swimming as a result, but could not replace the Subaru WRX as the world’s most popular road-going ingular car. Despite its unique presence in the original Audi Quattro, the souped Impreza is synonymous with the vehicle’s hooligan and (for some reason) inhaling steam.

Delivered to the United States as part of the 2002 model, the WRX has matured as slowly as the 20-year hardcore fan base. This is clear because the company has chosen to provide the car with a new platform, new engine and updated look while adhering to its fundamentals. So, at least in a relative sense, customers need to get more from their cars.

Currently, the 2022 WRX turbocharged 2.4-liter horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder on the ubiquitous Subaru Global Platform has only 3 horsepower bumps compared to its predecessor. The last incarnation of the all-wheel drive model enjoyed 268hp, while the new model offers 271hp and 258lb-force torque. Happily, the manufacturer said the engine could be combined with either a continuously variable transmission or a 6-speed manual with a real handbrake, which is likely to be a more enjoyable option.

While WRX suddenly wonders about the impact of sharing a platform with an SUV, the company claims that swaps provide the model with a low center of gravity and excellent rigidity. According to Subaru, the suspension mounting points have been increased by 75% (compared to the previous generation) and the overall torsional stiffness of the chassis has increased by 28%. The upgrade also comes with electronically controlled dampers, improved steering feedback, and a sway bar mounted on the chassis (rather than the subframe) to reduce roll. Noise, vibration and harshness should also be significantly improved.

Frankly, marketing sounds like it’s made from trash that’s sewn on an old model. But don’t forget that the company now wants to sell to you New arrival There is all interest in making the 2022 model sound like it’s changing the game.

That may be true, but you won’t notice it from the outside. Despite being packed with touches to distinguish it from previous generations, the 2022 model is unattractive. The silhouette is almost the same as before, but the new model incorporates more modern lamps (front and rear) and a tone-down touch from the VIZIV concept car. Your author doesn’t find it particularly appealing, but it applies to most Impreza models-some of which later grew to me like a fungus (eg Blobeye, Bugeye, VA). ..

Anyway, those who just want a car for a performance chop know that the aftermarket has a lot of options for exterior trimming within a few years. Until then, the WRX comes with 17-inch or 18-inch wheels and is available in Dunlop SP Sport Maxx Summer Rubber, Big Fenders, and a fairly aggressive hood scoop.

But the feeling we are getting is that Subaru is trying to improve its car to appeal to a wider market and a core audience that is no longer just graduating from high school. The press material contains a fair amount of text that explains how the car is more comfortable than before while preserving the existing performance chops. The previous central display (topped at 7.0 inches) now defaults to a 11.6-inch touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). This is clearly considered to be the central focus of the cabin. EyeSight Driver Assist Technology with new safety and useful features is available as well. These are the kind of things you’d expect to hear about the next Ford Explorer, not a nifty sport compact designed to be shattered all year round.

Those who are dissatisfied with the standard WRX may want to step up to the GT model. GT adds multiple suspension settings, unique 18-inch wheels, summer tires, and adaptive dampers with suede Recaro front seats, while other trims (Premium and Limited) focus on providing amenities. To do. The STI model will also arrive in the near future with a motor rumored to output 400 horsepower.

Subaru’s WRX recipe works so well that this car was able to surpass almost all of its historic rivals. However, competition around the area has increased recently, most of which has resulted in slightly more flashy cars than Subaru wants to keep prices low by sticking to front-wheel drive (eg Velostar N). We want to retain the space Subaru has and target the WRX between the less powerful front-wheel drive Volkswagen GTI and the tougher cars dedicated to delivering performance. That probably means increasing habitability at the expense of maximizing thrills. But the more comfortable WRX isn’t necessarily a bad thing (because Subaru was heading in that direction anyway), and it’s still unclear how it stacks up in the real world. It may still reveal everything else in its price range, which is undecided, but could stay below $ 30,000, along with some AWD cars that carry higher MSRPs.
