Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) — Volunteers signaled drivers at this year’s Mayflower Marathon Food Drive to boost energy and sport holiday gear.
“I come here every year. Helping others is at the bottom of my heart,” said community member Gale Millick.
The annual event is held annually by 106.9 Fox and FM99, and this year marks the quarter century that it gives to those in need.
The donation will support the inventory of Virginia Peninsula Food Banks and Southeast Virginia and Eastern Shore food banks.
Mallory Wreckling, a food bank in southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore, said supply chain issues and rising prices have made their jobs even more difficult.
“The price of food offered from this time last year to this time this year has almost doubled as it has risen from 40 cents to 73 cents, so more food and money will be offered this weekend. It’s important, “Reckling said.
It was a local women’s motorcycle group who helped outside Pembroke Mall on Sunday morning. They donated nearly $ 1,000 to over 1200 meals.
“We are all here to help those in need. Even if you could give $ 5.10, it’s great to tell people you’re thinking about them. That’s the way, “said Wind Honey’s Vice President of Women. Badger chapter, Nancy Salvat.
Last year, Food Drive raised 1.1 million meals at all four locations. That is the goal they want to exceed this year.
