Vatican Announces New Lead Worth Pursuing in 1983 Disappearance of 15-Year-Old Emanuela Orlandi

Exactly 40 years later, Teenage daughter of Vatican official disappearsThe Vatican announced on Thursday that new clues “worthy of further investigation” have raised the hope that one of the enduring mysteries of the papacy will finally be answered.

Emanuela Orlandi On June 22, 1983, he disappeared after leaving his family’s apartment in Vatican City to attend music lessons in Rome. Her father was a lay official in the papal court, the episcopate of the Catholic Church in Rome, headed by the Pope.

Over the years, her disappearance has been linked to everything from plots to kill St. John Paul II to financial scandals involving the Vatican Bank and the Roman underworld.

Vatican criminal prosecutor Alessandro Didi announced on Thursday that he had recently sent all relevant evidence collected in the six months since he reopened the investigation into Orlandi’s disappearance to prosecutors in Rome. In his statement, he vowed that he would continue to pursue the case.

Public interest in the case was revived last year with the four-part Netflix documentary Vatican Girl. The documentary explored various possible scenarios for her disappearance and also provided new testimony from a friend of hers that Orlandi had told her the week before her disappearance: . A Vatican prelate had sexually seduced her.

After the documentary aired and as the 40th anniversary of his disappearance approached, Orlandi’s family, with the support of some members of parliament, called for the establishment of a commission of inquiry in the Italian parliament. Separately, the Vatican and Rome’s public prosecutor’s office have reopened the investigation.

The former prosecutor of Rome, Giuseppe Pignatone, who kept the case within the Italian legal system, is now chief justice of the Vatican Criminal Court, where Didi is the chief prosecutor.

Didi said in a statement that his office had collected “all available evidence within the Vatican and the Holy See”.

He said his office also interrogated people who held Vatican offices 40 years ago.

“The authorities proceeded to examine the materials, identified several investigative leads worthy of further investigation, and sent all relevant documents to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rome in recent weeks, so that the latter could examine it. “We believe it is the most appropriate,” he said in a statement.

He expressed solidarity with the Orlandi family.

Pietro Orlandi, who has fought for 40 years to find out the truth about his sister, is planning a sit-in protest near the Vatican on Sunday. He has long accused the Vatican of never revealing what it knows about the case.
