Joplin, Mon. -Three people were killed and several were injured after an Amtrak train running between Seattle and Chicago derailed Saturday afternoon in north-central Montana.

Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said in a statement that the Empire Builder train had derailed near about 200 towns of Joplin at 4 pm.

According to Abrams, the train had about 147 passengers and 13 crew members.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that three people had died.

Several other injuries were reported, according to Amtrak. However, at this time, the amount and extent of these injuries has not been announced.

The image of the scene shows that the train is lying down when people are gathering around the train. Passengers were standing beside the railroad tracks, and some carried luggage.

The cause of the derailment is unknown at this time.
