Greeley — A Colorado judge set a $ 5 million deposit on Friday for a man accused of abducting and killing a 12-year-old girl in 1984.

Prosecutors said there was sufficient circumstantial evidence to prosecute Steve Punky, 69, for the murder of 12-year-old Johnel Matthews. Her body was found in July 2019 (35 years after her death) after construction workers dug a pipeline in a rural area southeast of Greeley, a city about 50 miles (80 km) north of Denver. It was discovered.

Rob Miller, assistant district attorney in Weld County, pointed out the case where Punky went to the Greeley police station and claimed he was the ordained Baptist minister and the parishioners had given him information about the case. Miller said. Police have determined that Punky was not an ordained minister and said he was trying to gather more information about the status of the murder investigation.

The prosecutor also mentioned the alibi letter Punky, which was sent to the District Attorney’s Office in 2011. The letter contained details about Punky’s family trip after Johnnel’s disappearance. The details did not match the information that the investigator originally edited from Punky. When Greeley had no gas, he claimed to have obtained gas at Texaco, and when he was a car salesman who had several cars in 1984, he did not own multiple cars. The Greeley Tribune reported.

The 69-year-old prosecutor also submitted two documents stating that he called for caution. In a 1999 document, Mr. Punky told investigators that Matthews’ case could not be resolved without his help, Miller said. In a 2003 document, Mr. Punky said he had relevant information about the case and wanted to make a deal to provide the location of Matthews’ body without providing his name, Miller said.

Punky’s defense lawyer, Anthony Violst, said all the information presented had nothing to do with Matthews’ murder.

Punky faces two murder charges, two violent crime charges, and two kidnapping charges. All are felony.

Punky’s bond provisions prevent him from leaving the state without written permission, contacting the listed witnesses, and carrying a gun. He was tracked by GPS and also had to surrender his passport.

The next hearing of the incident is scheduled for December 30th.
