Albuquerque, New Mexico—Five counties in New Mexico are suing global consulting firms, claiming to have contributed to the deadly opioid epidemic in the state.

The proceedings were filed against McKinsey & Company by the counties of Grant, Roosevelt, Sandoval, Rio Ariva and Mora.

The county has accused consulting firms of financial damage to emergency situations, law enforcement agencies, and child protection services used to combat opioid addiction and overdose. ..

According to the proceedings, the company served as Purdue Pharma’s external marketing arm and has long helped develop marketing strategies to boost sales of the opioid analgesic oxycontin.
