5th grader turns school project into published book about her great grandmother – Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado 2021-05-14 23:04:36 –

Highlands Ranch, Colorado — Started with a standard school project for writing reports on grandparents. The final publication of the book by 12-year-old Rozi McDonald will be a learning adventure.

“I could have chosen another grandparent, but I chose her,” McDonald said, referring to her great-grandmother Dorothy Manes.

The two videos recently chatted on Zoom and shared the story behind the story that eventually became McDonald’s book.

“When you called me, I thought,’Gosh Logi, I’m old, so I’m not going to remember all this,'” said 91-year-old Manes with a laugh.

McDonald’s and her great-grandmother exchanged letters, and as the process unfolded, Dorothy remembered a lot about her life growing up in Kansas.

“How we lived on the farm and had a garden,” she said.

It contained a story dating back to the 1930s.

“When I started, I remembered things,” Manes said.

The story and letters continued until McDonald’s decided to make her school project more than a single report.

“Dust bowl, World War II,” recalled McDonald’s. “They store all the flour bags and make dresses from the flour bags.”

With the help of his aunt, who is also a writer, McDonald’s published the life story of his great-grandmother in the book “Little Birdie Tells Me.”

“The life of a woman through the eyes of her great-granddaughter,” said McDonald’s. “I like that part.”

76 pages with hand-painted artwork on the cover.

“I like the picture on your front,” Manes told McDonald’s in the zoom video chat.

She may be the subject of the book, but this great-grandmother is proud for another reason.

“I have some friends who tell me how great a gal she is. Anyway, you know you were a hit,” she told McDonald’s.

This is a generation-to-generation story that brings fifth grade and her great-grandmother closer than any video chat.

“It was special,” Manes told McDonald’s. “You made my day and you made my life.”
