South Carolina Spartanberg (WSPA)-Spartanberg Mayor Junie White announced Thursday that he would not run for reelection.

Junie White has led the city of Spartanberg for 12 years, for a total of three terms. He will soon give the key to someone else.

2009 was the first time White ran for mayor.

“I always wanted to get involved in politics, but I didn’t have the opportunity,” White said.

White is now in this third semester and he hasn’t looked back.

For him, the job was never about himself.

“I wanted to serve people and listen to them,” White said.

He says he is proud of everything he was able to accomplish as a mayor, but the best part of all the twelve years he says was the council of people around him.

White said: We work together, we don’t fight, we don’t make a fuss. We solve things. “

White says he believes that younger people should take their seats.

“We are one age. Many young people are in the council and in the community,” White said.

Even though he left the office, he says he still has a dream of the city and still helps him in every way he can.

White said: I hope he always has an open door policy where everyone can talk to him. Being friendly, kind and open to people is paramount to work. “

The official filing of the Mayor’s Race begins on July 19th and ends on August 13th.

The new mayor of Spartanberg will be elected in November and will officially serve the city in January 2022.
