70-year-old gunman kills three at Alabama church supper | Alabama

A 70-year-old man shot and killed three people at a church dinner. AlabamaThe police said.

According to officials, a man who had previously participated in service at the Anglican Church of St. Stephen pulled out a pistol and shot deadly three of the participants, one of whom she said love in his wife’s arms. He died when he whispered to his ear.

According to a former minister, one of the church members rushed to the shooter, beat him in a chair, and detained him until police arrived.

The suspect, Robert Findley Smith, was charged with murder on Friday, the District Attorney Jefferson County said.

The incident in the wealthy suburbs of Birmingham surprised a community known for its family-friendly lifestyle. It also deepened the anxiety of a country still upset by recent shootings at schools in Texas, grocery stores in New York, and another church in California.

Rev. Doug Carpenter, a 30-year minister of St. Stephens, said all three victims were members attending a monthly dinner at the church.

Another member, a man in his 70s, grabbed a chair and charged the shooter, Carpenter said.

“He hit him in a folding chair, wrestled him on the ground, took a gun from him, and hit his head with his own gun,” he said.

Captain Shaneware said church members had detained the suspect until police arrived. A photo of the police face blackened his left eye and showed Smith with his nose and forehead cut.

“In my opinion, it was the hero who subdued the suspect,” Ware said at a press conference on Friday that the act was “very important in saving lives.”

The shooting on Thursday occurred shortly after a man fired at a Taiwanese parishioner in a church in Southern California, killing one and injuring five.

It’s also been about seven years since the white supremacist killed nine people during a Bible study at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

A message posted by St. Stephen states that we will be worshiping on Sunday. “We are not only suspicious, angry, lost, sad, or dead, but also joy and life.”
