Police said in a statement that Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Dean Haydn, a senior state coordinator of counterterrorism policing, officially declared the case terrorism. The ministry also said a preliminary study “revealed potential motivations related to Islamic extremists.”

Around noon local time, Essex police responded to reports that someone had been stabbed. According to police, the victim identified as Ames was injured and died on the scene.

A 25-year-old British man was arrested on the scene “on suspicion of murder,” police said. He is currently detained in Essex.

Police said the man acted alone and believed that there was no danger to the public. Authorities are currently searching in two unspecified locations in the London area.

Ames, 69, has been a member of parliament for decades. He belonged to the Conservative Party, got married and had five children.

He is not the only member of the country that has been killed in recent years. Labor Jo Cox was hit deadly in her district in 2016.

British lawmakers mourned Ames’ death on social media. “David was a man who believed in the country and its future. We lost a good civil servant,” wrote Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Kiel Starmer, the leader of the opposition Labor Party, has accused “horrible and shocking news.”

Conservative Tracey Crouch tweeted that she was “broken heart.”

“I was able to write a series about Sir David being one of the kindest, most compassionate, and most favorite colleagues in Congress. But I can’t. I feel sick. I’m lost, “she wrote. “Sleep peacefully. A little light went out in Congress today. We miss you.”

The investigation into Ames’ death is led by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Counterterrorism Command.
