Modesto (CBS13) – The community is in mourning after a deadly shooting in Modesto killed two people and left another to fight for his life in the hospital.
The candle and flower monument grew up through Saturday afternoons and nights at Modesto’s house, where three people were shot. Neighbors believe that the victim was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The family identified one of the victims as Brandon Wheeler. His brother, Jimmy Wheeler, was in tears because he remembered his brother as a great father.
“He was a wonderful person. He has three children,” Wheeler said. “He changed his life. He was just a big teddy bear.”
Brandon on the right was one of the two killed. His brother, also in the picture, is in grief tonight.
“He wasn’t worth going this way,” he told me.

According to Wheeler, the surviving victim is his cousin, who is recovering in the hospital and is in crisis.
“He is expected to survive,” he said. “I pray to God that he will, and he saw something.”
At the growing monument, Debra and Keith Huggins placed candles in memory of the victims. The couple were very close to their family and celebrated Brandon’s birthday with him just a few days before filming.
“You wouldn’t dream of this happening to such a person,” Huggins said.
There were many bullet holes in the windows of another house a few houses below the monument. Across the street, Victoria Webster heard several gunshots and believed that Brandon and two other victims were simply involved in the gunshots.
“They had nothing to do with it,” Webster said. “They weren’t targets. They were just in the wrong place.”
However, Modesto police do not say so, as they are in the early stages of the investigation. But the day after the shooting, Wheeler said the family still had more questions than answers.
“We don’t know what happened,” Wheeler said. “Are they innocent bystanders? That’s what we envision.”
Wheeler is begging someone who knows something to come forward.
“Justice will be served whether it is here or not by God,” he said.
At this time, it is not clear if there are any suspects, motives, or leads. But modest police say they are looking for witnesses. Anyone who sees or knows something will be asked to call Crimestoppers at 209-521-4636.
