Oklahoma City () – Authorities are currently investigating a large fire that burned down a church in northeastern Oklahoma City late Monday night.

Around 10 pm on Monday, a firefighter in Oklahoma City was called into a big fire at a vacant church in 2200 blocks of N. Prospect.

As soon as the firefighters arrived at the scene, parts of the roof and masonry walls began to collapse.

Authorities said it was too dangerous to try to extinguish the fire from the inside, so they remained defensive.

Once they were able to control the fire, firefighters came up with plans to prevent the hotspot from rekindling the flame.

Due to the size of the church and the amount of debris inside, they decided to leave two fire trucks on the scene all night, changing fresh companies at different times.

Investigators say the church has been vacant for years and there was no utility in the structure.

At this point, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
