Tulsa, Oklahoma — We wanted to understand what parents go through when looking for these supplies and how much they cost.
2 News Oklahoma reporter Janet Quezada went shopping at Walmart with a list of what her third graders needed and began filling up her shopping cart.
“For fourth grade, we’re shopping for school and trying to find all the school supplies we need,” said Lindsey Park, a mother of four, who shopped at the store on Tuesday.
Park and her 4-year-old son were on the same mission.
“Get everything before the crowds get here,” she said.
Two of her children are of school age. She said it was hard trying to find every item on the school’s list.
“I feel like the list keeps growing. They keep needing more and more stuff, so I think that might be the harder thing,” Park said.
The average spending for a household with children is $864, about $168 more than in 2019, according to the American Retail Federation.
“I know everyone is trying to be very budget conscious as we’re going back to school and shopping this year,” Walmart said.
We continued shopping to get all the supplies our 3rd graders needed: notebooks, pencil pouches, backpacks, etc. After scanning all the items, the total came to $119.08.
However, Carter reminds her parents that they have a deal during the period Tax free weekend starting this Fridaywhich is what parents like Park want to take advantage of one at a time when shopping for their students.
“We’re just trying to make ends meet,” says Parke.
