Horry County, South Carolina (WBTW) — St. James High School students are considered heroes after saving their father’s life.
Murrells Inlet’s 17-year-old Patrick Gallagher said the experience was something he didn’t expect to experience.
“I’m close to my dad, so I was worried that I would lose him out of nowhere,” he said.
Patrick and his dad, Pat, were playing video games when Pat suddenly fell into cardiac arrest.
“He was there for a second, but the next time I looked around, he didn’t look like he was there,” Patrick said.
Patrick immediately called 911 after a period of shock and panic. After checking his pulse, he began giving his father CPR and continued until rescuers arrived.
“I wasn’t prepared for that, and I always thought it would never happen to someone like me,” Patrick said. “Then I was at the moment when the minutes were important and it was happening to me.”
Pat spent almost a week in the ICU connected to a defibrillator. He also fought COVID-19. The doctor said his father would not have been alive today if Patrick had not acted as fast as he did.
“Of course, that’s great,” Pat said. “I didn’t think he could actually do that. I’m glad he was. He’s definitely a hero to me.”
Family currently has GoFundMe Set to support medical expenses. They say it can be stressful to come up with money, support is already being poured from family and friends.
“I want that stress rather than the stress of not being here,” Patrick said. “It’s very good to see support. I know it makes him feel better.”
