A memorial service in honor of Colin Powell is scheduled for November 5th at Washington National Cathedral. The Associated Press reports.

A spokeswoman said the monument would be an invitation only.

The former Secretary of State, who was suffering from some type of blood cancer, died on October 18th from a complication of COVID-19.

Powell, a retired Army general, has a complex legacy.

He was the first African-American to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State.

But his reputation was hurt when he stood in front of the UN Security Council and said that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The false information was used as the basis for going to war with Iraq.

Powell later accused his speech of “the failure of great intelligence.”

Powell was 83 years old.
