Shelbyville, Ky. (LEX 18) — A small home community for homeless veterans has been opened to help Kentucky military personnel and military personnel recover.
Veteran’s Club, Awake Ministries, Veterans Rural Outreach, and Crossroads Missions have been developing projects since 2020.
On Saturday, Veterans Village celebrated its grand opening.
Jeremy Harrell, CEO of the Veterans Club, said: “I hope veterans come from all over Kentucky and come here to really help them. Whether it’s big or small they need to overcome, we I just want to live with them and help them get over it.
Veterans Village has 6 furnished Tiny Houses.
Veterans can apply for a transitional housing program that lasts up to a year.
“I don’t want this to be a kind of band-aid scenario of 30, 60, 90 days that isn’t very useful in the long run. We want to focus on long-term healing.” Said Harrell.
“It was a lifesaver for me,” said Barbara Kenny, who moved to one of the units in mid-May.
Kenny said she lived in a trailer for a small camper in Henry County and recently broke her hip when she heard about the Tiny House community.
“I don’t want you to be afraid to ask for help when you need it,” Kenny said.
Harrell said the program has been successful so far.
The grand opening was Saturday, but the first veteran returned in March.
“We put a lot of effort and energy into this, but we know it will pay off and we’re already doing well. Two veterans have already done so in this short amount of time. I felt I had reached a place where I could live independently, so I moved, and that’s our goal, “Harrell said.
When veterans are accepted into the temporary housing program, they will be provided with $ 200 clothing and $ 250 food to stock up on their necessities.
Veterans are also encouraged to participate in other support programs offered by the Veterans Club, such as horse therapy sessions.
Currently, Veterans Village has three vacancies.
