Kansas City, Missouri — On September 11, 2001, when a terrorist attacked, Denease Conley was already absent from work at the North Tower of the World Trade Center. But she returned, knowing that the people inside the building needed help.
Twenty years later, KSHB 41 News shares the story of her last heroic moment through her family, a New York journalist, and the footage he shot.
The day after the terrorist attack, KSHB 41 News talked to Conley’s seven brothers, laughing, crying and wondering what happened that day.
“I know she probably helped people inside the building go out,” Barbara Haynes Jenkins said at the time.
Twenty years later, there is video evidence that Conley was helping firefighters enter the tower.
Jack Tarielcio was a New York City journalist rushing to capture a video after the first plane crash. Another guard asked him to leave the area, and Tarielcio said he “chased him through Building 4. Denise closed the door behind me.”
There is a 22 second video of Conley standing in front of the door and holding it for a few firefighters as he enters the tower where Conley was working.
“I wasn’t surprised because I knew she helped a lot of people, but now that I’m celebrating my 20th anniversary, I’ll use her memory to let people know what she and what she did. Because of that, I want to fight more. Even if the world doesn’t know who she is, it’s the last selfless act and she deserves it, so I always want to be aware of it I think, “said Conley’s niece, Davena Price Faraj.
These seconds reveal how selfless the natives of Kansas City were during the country’s tragedy.
Three years later, Jenkins got married on September 11, her husband’s birthday.
This year, the whole family will meet at the reception, attend a monument to Mount Moria, enjoy a wedding anniversary party and a big barbecue for fellowship and fun.
It’s a way to get the most out of their time together on an eternally unusual day for them and the country.
“Time takes us for granted. We always get here and are in a hurry to get there, and sometimes you miss things and you until they come here Don’t miss them, “Faraj said.
