A Virginia man arrested during the assault on the U.S. Capitol was “brainwashed,” his daughter says.

Robin Sweet was always near his father, Doug, who grew up in Virginia. As a kid, she thought of him as her “rock.” Her dad’s career at a shipyard near his home ended in the early 1990s when he was injured at work. Sweet’s parents are divorced and Doug works as a handyman in the town.

Mr Sweet said he didn’t remember growing up with politics, but things changed when his father began attending the rally.

“when Charlottesville “My dad was there,” Sweet told CBS News Ben Tracy.

At Unite the Right, a 2017 white supremacist rally, Mr. Sweet said his father had fully embraced former President Trump’s rhetoric about protecting the Confederate heritage. There she said she found a new home in far-right politics. Many were done online.

“We couldn’t have regular conversations. They would go just below this rabbit hole, like” they are bleeding to make adrenochrome with their children. ” She said.

Adrenochrome is a compound produced by the oxidation of adrenaline. It has also become an element of the unfounded online conspiracy theory known as QAnon..

At the same time, Robin devoted himself to the issue of racial justice and marched with Black Lives Matter last summer.

Then on January 6th, because Americans were watching the riots invade. US Capitol, Sweet wondered if her father was in a flood of riots.

“My first thought was,’My dad must be there.’ I was afraid of him. I had people check his Facebook. He posted nothing. I didn’t, “she said. “Then I was really scared, and someone sent me a news report listing that he was arrested.”

Sweet is among at least 238 people charged for their alleged role in riots. Federal prosecutors have launched more than 400 investigations into possible criminals resulting from an attack on the Capitol.

Sweet comes from Matthews, Virginia, a seaside town of 9,000 people. Some residents said the once-hidden views of radicals and racists have been fully exhibited in recent years.

“Since I was a kid, the attitudes, ideas and motives that have sent people to the Capitol have been bubbling down here,” Sean Cosby said.

“What do you think was the reaction to what happened in protest against racial justice last summer?” Tracy asked.

“I think there are a lot of them. I think the point is that there are a lot of people who are incredibly afraid, and they can’t express it clearly and they don’t know how to express it,” Cosby said. It was.

Sweet wasn’t the only Matthew who allegedly participated in the Capitol riots. Federal prosecutors have charged Cindy Fitchett with illegally invading the Capitol. Both Sweet and Fitchett pleaded not guilty.

Immediately after Sweet was arrested, he said he did not take it maliciously or maliciously. He declined the request for an interview with CBS News and will appear in court in March.

House prosecutors used Sweet’s own words in the impeachment trial of former President Trump.

Sweet was reported to have said he had appeared on January 6th, as Mr. Trump told his so-called “digital soldiers” to be there.

Robin said she recently met her dad, and she hopes they can fix their relationship.

“After all, they’re your family. I feel like he’s been brainwashed in a way,” Sweet said.

“You obviously still love him,” Tracy asked.

“Oh, definitely,” she said.
