Friday is the anniversary of the collapse of an oceanfront condo that killed 98 people in Surfside, Florida.

The 12-story tower descended with a thunderous roar, leaving a huge pile of rubble in one of the most deadly collapses in US history. The disaster at Champlain Towers South was also the largest emergency response in history in Florida without a hurricane.

The victim was honored Friday at a ground event where a tough two-week search and rescue unfolded. Only two teenagers and one woman survived the fall and were separated from the rubble.

Others escaped from the part of the building that initially stood. First Lady Jill Biden will be attending a public event hosted by the town of Surfside.

Meanwhile, the judge has confirmed a $ 1 billion settlement this week to be paid to survivors, property owners and victims’ families.
