Meta Is introducing a new way for people to log in to virtual reality headsets without using Facebook credentials. This is the company’s latest effort to separate its futuristic Metaverse ambitions from its core social media business.

Mark ZuckerbergIn a blog post on Thursday, the CEO of a company now known as Meta announced that the Meta account will debut in August. Zuckerberg says users will be able to access the Meta Quest VR headset with their new account and view their purchase history for VR apps.

Meta still gets virtually all the revenue from the Facebook family of apps, but Zuckerberg Trying To convince investors and a subset of specific customers that the business is heading in a different direction as the Metaverse evolves.

Zuckerberg’s Metaverse vision includes a variety of virtual worlds accessible through VR and augmented reality technologies. VR and AR headsets are still niche devices in a smartphone-dominated world, but Facebook’s founders have shown that they represent the future of computing, he recently said. Said He expects one billion users to spend hundreds of dollars each on the Metaverse by the second half of the decade.

But today’s story is very different. Reality Labs, Meta’s division responsible for developing Metaverse and its underlying technology, has invested $ 10. a billion Loss in 2021.

Meta is also trying to modify the customer base of current QuestVR users after the company previously requested access to headsets using Facebook accounts. As a result of the backlash, Meta announced that it would change course in October.

“We received a lot of feedback from the Quest community when we announced that we would require a login to MetaQuest using our Facebook account,” Zuckerberg said in a blog post Thursday. “We took that feedback into account when designing a new meta-account structure that gives people flexibility and control.”

In addition to abandoning the need to use Facebook credentials, Meta is making marketing changes to further introduce the brand. The user will now have a MetaHolizon profile instead of having an Oculus profile. Facebook inherited its name when it acquired Oculus in 2014 to enter the VR market. This will allow people to customize their VR usernames, virtual avatars, and other information using the Meta Horizon profile, Zuckerberg said.

A Meta spokeswoman told CNBC that users would need both a Meta account and a Meta Horizon profile to access the company’s VR headset.

Zuckerberg also states that Quest’s nomenclature is similar to Instagram because Quest VR users have “followers” rather than “friends.”

“If you already own a MetaVR headset, your Oculus friends will automatically become followers and follow back by default,” he said. “You can choose to unfollow or remove followers at any time.”

Meta has also released a new tool that allows users to manage their privacy settings in VR, making the Meta Horizon profile public, private, or private to friends and family only. Allows you to choose.

If users don’t select privacy settings, they will be set to friends and family by default, a spokeswoman said. Current QuestVR users will need to select privacy settings to continue using the headset.
