A felony charge was filed Wednesday against a man in Riverside County who was suspected of fleeing the scene after crashing an SUV into a security station in Long Beach and killing a 54-year-old security guard.
The crash occurred around 3 pm on Saturday at the Century Village of the Cabrillo Apartment Complex on the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue near the Pacific Coast Highway and the Terminal Island (103) Freeway. According to Lieutenant Scott Jenson of the Long Beach Police Station, the driver then abandoned the 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe and fled the scene on foot.
He said the responding police found that Los Angeles resident Derrick Smith was injured in the hut and provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived. Medical personnel continued to provide assistance, but Smith was injured and died on the scene.
Police arrested Quentin Darnell Black, 31, in Moreno Valley, on Monday and booked him in a prison at the Long Beach Police Station with a bail of $ 100,000, police said.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a manslaughter charge for a vehicle on Wednesday for gross negligence and hit-and-run driving, resulting in the death or serious injury of others to the black. According to a DA secretariat spokeswoman, he will hold a pre-hearing meeting in a courtroom in Long Beach on July 7.
