Washington — Character actor Fred Ward has died, a spokeswoman for him confirmed on Friday. He was 79 years old.

Ward died on Sunday, May 8, according to spokeswoman Ron Hoffman. The cause of her death was not revealed.

Ward was primarily known for his role in movies such as “Tremors,” “The Right Stuff,” and “Player.” The veteran character actor played a role in the Italian television film in 1973, beginning with the silver screen and lasting for 40 years. In total, he was credited with over 85 film and television projects.

His last film role was Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg’s 2013 Buddy Cop film “2 Guns.”

According to a biography released by his spokesman, Ward began acting after three years in the US Air Force. Ward had a scattered resume, even before his career as an actor landed him in a variety of roles. He worked in Alaska as a short-term cook, boxer, and lumberjack. In the last years of his life, Ward reportedly polished his second favorite form of art, painting.

“The unique thing about Fred Ward is that he didn’t know where he would appear, so his career choices were unpredictable,” Hoffman said in an email.

He is survived by his 27-year-old wife Mari France Ward and his son Django Ward.
