LEXINGTON, Kentucky (LEX 18) — Child star Soleil Moon Frye was a hit in the 1980s with the sitcom Punky Brewster. Along the way, she made some dear friends in bluegrass.

“I love Kentucky.”

Today, actor, director and author Soleil serves on the board of CORE, a global crisis response team led by Sean Penn.

“I was in awe of the kindness and humanity I was able to witness.”

Two of Soleil’s best friends grew up in Kentucky… in the very blight of the area.

“This happened in a community that has a lot of people I love and is at the heart of my relationship soul, so it was incredibly important for me to go.

CORE reports that it was dispatched to the scene in eastern Kentucky almost immediately after the flooding. Soleil spent several days there.

“Everyone I met told me to go help a neighbor or a friend. They quickly took their attention away from themselves and turned their attention to others who needed help.”

Soleil says that the kindness of neighbors who sacrificed for their neighbors had a big impact.

So was the image she still had haunting.

“A road you can’t take, no electricity, no water, no food (Pause emotionally) Yeah, there really are no words to describe it.”

She’s back in California with her kids, but Soleil says CORE is still handing out supplies and lifting up the same people who still inspire her.

“This is a special part of our country. They are special, beautiful people who have lost their homes and so many have lost their lives.”

“I am still very emotional because it is very difficult to put into words. I feel so much for this community and I want people to know and see what happened there. “
