Not long ago, Rare Rides Gurgel XEFA luxuriously intended Brazilian microcar based on Volkswagen, styled like a modern Mercedes-Benz. Rare rides today are a very different Brazilian view of the same basic bone.

Say hello to Renha Formigão.

Renha is an abbreviation for Renha Indústriae Comércio de Veículos, which means Renha Industry and Commerce of Vehicles in English. Founded in Rio de Janeiro, the company was the founder of Paulo Sérgio Renha. Renha was a powerboat race enthusiast and set a speed record in the Atlantic Ocean on the crossing from Santos to Rio de Janeiro.

Renha had previously designed several buggies and cars for other Brazilian companies and decided to set up his own car company in 1977. The company’s original product was a trike with a Volkswagen engine. The first iteration of the trike faced legislative hurdles as it occupied a vehicle class not yet recognized by the Brazilian government. Renha was able to overcome the legalization by revising the trike after his first debut, adding more power and different bodywork. Sold as a kit or complete bike.

The following year, Renha had a more ambitious idea and launched Formigan. The body of a very small pickup truck was mounted directly on the Volkswagen Beetle chassis. Uses a 1.6 liter gas / ethanol engine. Renha made his own body, but made no mechanical changes underneath.

This body was designed with fiberglass, with an emphasis on practicality, and was mainly shaped by a ruler. Renha got some headlamps from Fiat 127 to complete the square look. The pickup bed could hold up to 1,433 pounds and its size capacity was about 25 cubic feet.

However, the capacity of the bed was not as practical as expected. Volkswagen did not supply Flat Design 1.6 from second-generation buses to outside companies, so Renha had to use the engine of the truck’s Beetle. As a result, the bed had a prominent rectangular ridge.

Inside, the buyer found a three-point seatbelt and rode it with a spare tire and battery behind the seat. Upgraded alloy wheels, reclining leather seats and luxurious trims that provide a convenient tachometer were also available.

Formigan continued to produce for some time, just as Paul Renja moved to a newly established company called Emis in 1980, where he produced his trikes. Formigão was reborn as Coyote in 1986 after the company acquired rights from Renha. By that time, Renha had returned to his true passion for boating and started a shipbuilding company.

Today’s Rare Ride is the 1979 Formigan, whose first production is nearing its end. With alloy wheels, it’s probably a luxury luxury model. From the photo, the bed engine bump problem seems to have been fixed by later owners, or later production Renha. This little truck is yours for $ 14,000.
