Advanced catalyst for biomass conversion

Working closely with researchers at the Centrale Lille Institute in Lille, France-Asynt has developed and supplied two custom high pressure reactors to support the development of new advanced catalysts for biomass conversion.

Lille’s Catalysis and Solid-State Chemistry Unit brings together experienced researchers, technical and administrative support staff, as well as a large group of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. The unit’s scientific activities can be divided into three areas: heterogeneous catalysis, catalysis and molecular chemistry, and solid-state chemistry. Within the VAALBIO group, the CatBioInnov team (led by Dr. Robert Wojcieszak) is focusing on advanced catalytic upgrades of biomass materials for biorefinery, along with research to streamline the use of fossil resources.

Dr. Robert Wojcieszak said: “Our new Cat BioInnov project is to transform C1 to C6 lignocellulosic molecules isolated from biomass into energy-driven applications such as the production of biopolymer chemical intermediates and biofuels and biofuel additives. To support this R & D, we decided to invest in two high pressure reactors. The team chose to source these units from Asynt. These units have a wide range of options for stirring, heating and sampling in addition to reactor size, construction materials and pressure ratings. This flexibility was the perfect solution for us. Normally, the catalyst is only milligrams. Because of this, we have made the overall volume of the high pressure reactor relatively small, which allows us to work with different catalytic metal / substrate ratios. We could also work at high pressures (up to 200 bar), which is very much for us. Important. Since our catalytic reactions are often carried out in corrosive media, it was logical to choose hasteloy for the structure of the reactor.

Dr. Wojcieszak said, “The two 50ml Hastelloy C276 high-pressure reactors provided by Asynt can significantly reduce the trial-and-error steps required to design new catalyst formulations. These reactors can be used to multiple reactors per day. You can run the tests and check the reaction rate. The Asynt high pressure reactor is also very easy to use, further reducing the time required to perform two consecutive reactions. The support from Asynt is perfect.
