Virginia Beach — SA man driving in the countryside of Virginia Beach in the early morning of May hits several mailboxes along Princess Anne Road on an illuminated sign in front of the Bethel Joint Methodist Church on the other side of the road. I collided.

They apparently took off south, leaving the driver’s side mirrors and irreparably damaged signs.

Today, the church is stuck figuring out how to replace the sign, and this small country place of worship is appealing to the wider community to raise money. Bethel, with its roots in a community dating back to the 1800s, has about 13 people in its congregation.

Rev. Barbara St. Jean, the minister there, said it would cost about $ 4,500 to replace the sign. She made some donations, and she wants more people to answer the call for help. Insurance does not cover it.

“We have a $ 5,000 deduction,” St. Jean said in an interview last week. “The sign under it will be $ 500. If we can get financial help from the community, it will help keep this little church running.”

The Southern Virginia Beach community has previously responded to calls to help Bethel.

St. Jean wrote via email about the 1947 fire that burned down the church. After that, the church had some insurance money, but also gifts from the community and income from the potato harvest, she wrote in her email.According to the book, members of the church wrote to their friends to fill the funding gap at the time. A glimpse into the history of Down County: Southern Princess County.

You can now make a donation, write a letter to the church, note that the gift is for a sign, and mail it to the Bethel United Methodist Church at 465 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. can do.

The sign is part of the ministry. It holds a message to reach passers-by.

“Whatever they experience on that particular day or week, they see the sign and it affects their lives,” said St. Jean.

The congregation keeps faith and wants help. The damaged sign still provides invitations to those driving Princess Anne’s road.

I read last week that “the sign was broken.” “Please go inside for a message.”
