Tallahassee, Florida — Attorney General Ashley Moody is suing the currently closed Olympus Pool and its owners for receiving down payments and leaving work incomplete. The move happens less than a week after I-Team investigator Jackie Callaway, who has covered the story of Olympus for months, asks the AG office when to publish the findings.
According to Attorney General Moody’s office, Olympus Spools and its owner, James I. Staten Jr., accepted payments from hundreds of consumers in exchange for their contracted pool service, but were able to perform the service as promised. It wasn’t. Unfinished work sometimes leaves consumers with huge holes in their property.
In addition to civil proceedings, the state-wide prosecutor’s office of the Attorney General assists local law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations.
Since March of this year, the Attorney General’s office has received more than 200 consumer complaints about Olympus Spool. This is said to have cost these consumers more than $ 8 million.
Olympus allegedly misrepresented the project timeline, forcing consumers to wait for work that was never completed. In addition, Olympus failed to pay some subcontractors, resulting in threats to litigation against consumers. Attorney General Moody has filed a complaint against the defendant in the 13th Circuit Court of the Hillsborough County.
According to new court documents, the move by Attorney General Moody took place less than a week after Staten and his wife Alexis filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
In their October 6 submission, the couple listed estimated assets between $ 500,000 and $ 1 million. Their estimated debt was listed between $ 1 million and $ 10 million. The company also listed the estimated number of creditors from 1 to 49. Among the largest creditors is SCP Distributors LLC, which was sentenced to $ 10.52 million in September against various companies, including James and Alexis Staten and Olympus Pools Inc.
