New York (AP) — Airbnb says it will block and cancel all bookings in the Washington, DC area during the presidential inauguration week.

The decision, announced Wednesday, was in response to various local, state, and federal authorities asking people not to travel to Washington, DC. Guests associated with hatred groups or acts of violence.

A San Francisco-based home sharing company said guests whose bookings were canceled will receive a full refund. Airbnb will refund the amount you would have earned from the canceled reservation to the host. In addition, reservations for HotelTonight, which is a last-minute discount service for top-class hotels owned by Airbnb, will also be cancelled.

Airbnb did not disclose the number of canceled reservations. However, on the weekend of President’s Birthday, the site lists more than 300 rental properties in the Washington, DC area.

“We’re working to keep members of the hate group from becoming part of the Airbnb community,” the company said in a corporate blog.

Airbnb said it learned through the media and law enforcement agencies the names of individuals who were identified as responsible for criminal activity in the US Capitol. It will then investigate whether the named individual has an account on Airbnb. Through this work, he identified a number of individuals associated with known hatred groups or involved in criminal activity in the Capitol and said they were banned from Airbnb’s platform.

Airbnb has a policy to remove guests who have been identified as members of a hate group since 2017, blocking guests heading to a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The company also said Monday that it would not make political contributions to Republicans who voted against proof of last week’s election results. Airbnb has taken that position by joining Marriott, AT & T, Wal-Mart and others.

Airbnb’s political action committee donated $ 866,519 to candidates and political parties during the 2020 election cycle, according to Open Secrets, which monitors campaign funding donations. Elected in the Democratic presidential election, Joe Biden was the largest recipient of Airbnb donations.
