Albuquerque’s city hearing officer denies Sheriff Gonzales’ appeal for public financing – Albuquerque, New Mexico

Harwood said the crucial basis for the ruling was the fact that Gonzales admitted that many of the eligible donation forms submitted to the city were counterfeit.

“I reject the argument that’this happens in all campaigns’. It shouldn’t happen in any campaign and rejects the natural idea that some fraud and tampering is acceptable or okay. “Harwood said. “In my view, the clerk has the right and obligation to refuse to authenticate a candidate for participation whenever a fraud or tampering is discovered, without the need to first quantify it.”

Mr Harwood also said that the central basis of the ruling was a “military rescue case” and that sheriffs did not have to pay a $ 5 donation to one of his supporters. Instead, he is said to pay for it.

“This is evidence of direct knowledge of fraud and tampering,” Harwood said. “There was no convincing evidence that the contributor proving the conversation with the sheriff had the motive to tamper with what he said.”

City hearings also rejected the argument that the city clerk had the unfavorable motive of refusing Gonzales’ public funds.

Gonzales still has the opportunity to bring the case to the district court.
