Alice, Texas — A man from southern Texas was recently appointed chairman of the Apache Apache Council.

Moses Hernandez of Alice, Texas was appointed Principal Chief after the former died from COVID-19. Taking on this role means that Hernandez will be responsible for the five regions of Texas.

“Even if we see them, there are hundreds of thousands here, the majority of whom run under Hispanics, and even knowing that their roots are indigenous. , They don’t call themselves indigenous peoples, “Hernandez said.

Hernandez takes great pride in educating others about the importance of contacting their heritage, in the experience of her family.

“Being an indigenous people is a privilege,” said Hernandez. “We are humans, not animals. We have probably been treated as a less human class, but we are equal to everyone else.”

A portrait of the Hernandez family is on display at Magill Brothers Building in Alice, Texas. He hopes that one day the indigenous peoples will be considered equal and the entire Apaches will be able to reconnect.

“I think this is the awakening of indigenous peoples,” Hernandez said. “We were a little silent. We don’t have enough communication with our leaders. Sometimes we lose contact.”
