Alon Balshan opened its first Alon’s Bakery & Market in 1992 on the Morning Side. For nearly 30 years, in one place in Danwoody, Balshan later brought homemade pastries, baked bread and gourmet sandwiches to the backhead. Alon’s, 5,300 sq ft, has taken over part of its former twisted restaurant space facing Peach Tree Road at Phipps Plaza.
“this is [Morningside] “Dan Woody,” says Balshan. “We tried to imitate the tightness of [Morningside’s] In a narrow passage, people are rubbing against each other, but in a larger space. There is charm. “
The Phipps location adds a modern touch to Balshan’s traditional rustic aesthetic. The front of the space is glass, some walls are brick, and others feature white subway tiles. There are both white quartz style countertops and recycled pine countertops to mix the new and old worlds. In the oven to the right of the entrance, customers can see the calibrated and displayed bread. There is also a covered 1,600-square-foot patio.
“We sell experiences that include cooking, music and services,” says Balshan. “You want to feel great when you come in.”
“I’ve always loved the market everywhere I traveled,” he continues. “My mission is to make others enjoy the experience.”
Aron’s Phipps Plaza offers the same menu as anywhere else, including bespoke sandwiches and salads, à la carte cooked entrees, croissants, cakes, cookies, bread, chocolates and cheese.
There is a large display case with ready-made sandwiches and focaccia sold in slices, all available by heating on request. Sandwich specials such as sliced lamb, hummus and harissa are also sold here.
The semi-circular bar divides the space between the sitting area and the market and serves four draft beers (rather than two in Danwoody) and about 15 wines in a glass. (40 bottles of wine are sold in bottles). In addition to cappuccino and espresso, the new location offers Batdorf & Bronson’s Nitro Cold Brew.
“We offer so many different things that we want our customers to experience the space, walk around and get bottles of wine and cheese,” says Balshan.
If you plan to stop by for breakfast or coffee, you don’t have to worry about parking as the mall isn’t open until 10am. For lunch rush, Alon’s has 3 reserved parking lots where customers can run inside and grab food and take it home within 15 minutes.
