Marion, South Carolina (WBTW) — Marion County is planning a grand opening of Amazing Grace Park in honor of the late Rev. Clementa Pinkney.
Pinkney and eight others were killed at Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston on June 17, 2015. The park has a playground for everyone, an educational playground, and musical instruments. It also provides a venue for meetings and local activities.
Stephanie Rizzo is the manager of the new park. She oversees day-to-day park activities, rental opportunities, park partnerships, events, and general management responsibilities.
“We really hope it will bring our community together. We are reaching out not only to Marion, but to Malins, as well as other communities within Speedy and throughout the state. “Rizzo said.
Senator Kent Williams is the cousin of the late minister and Senator Picney. He said it was the openness of the park that struck a chord with him.
“It happened when he died at Mother Emanuel AME Church because he opened his arms to everyone. They were there to study the Bible,” Williams said.
Rizzo also said that the park has many purposeful features.
“This fox here is unique in the world. It is made of wood shipped from Hungary and is resistant to rot and insects, so it will be here for years to come. Let’s do it. “
Details such as the fountain that holds the name of Charleston 9 are angel wings that also serve as a memorial to them. Williams says he wants the park to be a community together.
“This is a meeting place. It’s a place where people get together, talk, have fun, walk, and have kids play.”
The grand opening is from 10 am to 4 pm on July 31st. There are vendors and music.
