ST. Louis (KMOV.com) –A significant update is made for users of Amazon devices such as the Echo and Ring product lines. Amazon introduces a new network type called Sidewalk. This allows these devices to piggyback on your neighbor’s WiFi network and vice versa without exchanging passwords.

The idea is that if the network goes down, the ring camera can use the bandwidth of its neighbors to stay connected. This feature raises privacy concerns about data on the network, and Amazon Has a privacy and security white paper here.

The service will start on June 8th and anyone with an eligible device can opt out of the network.
