Tampa, Florida-Military leaders at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa recalled the lives lost at a ceremony at the Air Force Base’s Special Operations Memorial nearly 20 years ago. A solemn anniversary not only brings back memories of loss, but also the heroic acts we saw that day and in the years that followed.

For many members of the military, 9/11 marked the beginning of a long commitment to keeping Americans safe. The MacDill monument honors 660 members of the special operations force who have died since September 11, 2001.

Army General Marcus Evans served in Afghanistan and said September 11thNS This is a reminder that we have made thousands of sacrifices to keep our country safe.

“Men and women who have responded to the call for service and have repeatedly demonstrated courage, personality, and abilities in the most difficult situations,” Evans explained.

McDill’s leaders say America is safer than ever.

On September 11, 2001, MacDill-based US Army Special Command called in military personnel from 60 countries to support the war on terrorism. The number of bases has grown rapidly from 1,000 to 4,000 in the months since 9/11. Now, even when the troops withdraw from Afghanistan, the job at McDill to keep us all safe is more important than ever.

“Terrorism still exists and will not end just because we left. The SOCOM army is better than it was 20 years ago because we went because we participated in the battle. “I will,” said Commander SOCOM. Rich Clark.
